A male chinchilla penis is like a Telescope, so when checking for a hair ring, wrap your chinchilla in a towel and get someone to hold him securely.
Very gently hold the penis with one hand and ease it out of the sheath, holding the sheath with other hand.
If this is done slowly and gently it will not harm him
When it is out fully, you will see where it joins the sheath.
There may be a hair ring or sometimes just an odd hair.
Sometimes the hairs can be wrapped tightly around and you will need to very carefully cut the ring with small nail scissors
Do not attempt to cut if the chin is struggling!
When it is clear of hair - then lubricate with KY gel and ease the sheath back over the penis
Do not use Vaseline as this is not water soluble
Although hair rings are more common in breeding males, none breeding males can and do get them too
So do check all males on a regular basis.
If a male chin suddenly seems to be unhappy or unwell this should be the first thing you check for
(usually huddled up and does not want to move)
This is a hair ring on a light coloured chin
If you find that this is too much for you to cope then you will need to take your pet to the Vet - they should be able to remove the ring for you but they may also advice and show you how it's done - this way in case it happens again (which it more possibly could) you may have more of an idea what to do
Hair rings left and not treated is dangerous - chinchilla die if not treated quickly
